The woman facing attempting murder charges relating to last week’s stabbing at a Rosedale condo is on a suicide watch, according to her lawyer.
Former Liberal MP John Nunziata tells the Toronto Star they will be asking for a psychiatric assessment when Ellis Kirkland appears at a mental health court hearing on Monday.
Nunziata tells the newspaper he has known Kirkland through their families from his time as a politician in the 1980s, adding, what happened to her “just doesn’t make any sense”.
Kirkland is facing a number of charges including attempted murder and assault with a weapon after a woman stabbed a man in his 60s at a condo on Rosedale Valley Road last Thursday. She was later apprehended a few kilometres when police stopped a woman from jumping off a balcony at the Town Inn Suites on Church Street.
Kirkland is currently being held at the Vanier Centre for Women.
Nunziata tells The Star there will be no bail hearing until the psychiatric assessment is completed.
