The TTC’s proof-of-payment system allows one to board a steetcar using the centre or rear doors — bypassing the driver and fare box altogether — using a Metropass, a day or weekly pass, or a valid transfer.
The system is already in effect on Spadina Avenue, Queen Street, The Queensway and on Lake Shore Boulevard.
As announced on Monday, it goes into effect on the King Street streetcar route on Jan. 1. Mayor John Tory said almost 20 per cent of the King streetcar’s trip is spent stopping to let passengers off and on and promised that the new policy will cut that time in half.

TTC fare inspectors and enforcement officers enforce the system by making random checks between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., daily.
A transfer, pass or proof-of-purchase receipt must be showed.
According to TTC By-law No. 1, “Failure to surrender fare media” has a fine of $425.
If you don’t have a pass, fare-vending machines are on the new streetcars on Spadina Avenue and take exact change in coins only, $3.
The machines are also at the busiest stops on the route, which are the southbound stops at College Street, Queen’s Quay at Spadina, Rees Street and Lower Simcoe Street. There are machines located at the northbound stops too, at King Street, Richmond Street, Queen Street, Sullivan Street, Dundas Street, Nassau Street and College Street.
The system is also in effect on the 501 Queen and 301 Queen (Blue Night) streetcars on Queen Street and The Queensway between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston Road streetcar routes will also use the system, but only while travelling on Queen Street.
Lake Shore Boulevard
Route 508 Lake Shore cars will use POP while travelling on Lake Shore Boulevard.
