Peel police are investigating after a suspicious fire claimed the life of a female in Mississauga.

The blaze broke out around 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Quality Inn on Britannia Road East, near Hurontario Street.

Peel police say the female victim was taken to hospital where she later died.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to the scene.

Cliff Levias, who was staying in a room on the first floor of the hotel, said at first he thought it was a false alarm.

“We didn’t know what to make of it. I thought it was a false alarm. We gathered our stuff and we proceeded to the front of the hotel,” he explained. “There was panic. Hotel staff were pretty frantic.”

The hotel was evacuated and a bus was brought in to accommodate the guests.

There has been no word on the age of the victim.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
