An inquiry looking into a mall collapse that killed two women in Elliot Lake, Ont., has heard how the owner was desperate to offload the property.
Levon Nazarian, the owner’s son, says the stress of managing the mall was damaging his father’s health.
However, numerous offers fell through, often because the buyer could not get financing.
At the time, the bank was threatening to pull its mortgage because of the mall’s state of disrepair.
Had that happened, the Nazarians could have lost the property.
Nazarian also says his father spent a lot of money trying to upgrade the leaking roof.
