The OPP has charged a 53-year-old Kitchener man who drove into the back of a disabled car and killed a toddler on Saturday.

Around 6:30 p.m. a truck rear-ended a car which was stopped in a live lane of Highway 7/8, west of Fischer Hallman Road, in Kitchener.

A 17-month-old girl was taken to Grand River Hospital and then airlifted to the McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, where she was pronounced dead.

Her 36-year-old mother was taken to Grand River, where she remains in critical condition. The toddler’s father, 38, had only minor injuries.

Hugh John Brake, the driver of the truck, wasn’t hurt and police arrested him at the scene.

He has been charged with eight offences, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired driving causing death, obstructing justice and marijuana possession.

His bail hearing is scheduled for Sunday.

The OPP would like to talk to a nurse who helped out at the scene and any witnesses.
