Police are looking for a driver who ditched his car and ran away at a RIDE checkpoint in Scarborough early Sunday morning.
It happened near Warden Avenue and Danforth Road around 1:30 a.m.
As officers were checking drivers to make sure they were sober, the man — whose car was trapped in the lineup — fled on foot.
Police brought in dogs to help with the search, but didn’t find the man.

Spotchecks should be 24/7 everyday as far as RIDE goes…have been on the roads at all hours of the day and night and seenm people wipe out or leave the road have seen cars all over the road and lucky no one was beside them etc. Yea i like my drink much as the next guy but damn man if you cant keep it between the ditches you shouldnt be walking let alone drivin. And hey if your like a bug to a bright light and to dumb to hit the next available sidestreet well then you deserve to be busted,,personally im not that curious to see whats going on with those flashing lights ahead..seeya!

That being said, driving is a privilege, not a right. We might think it otherwise, but its not true. I am all for getting drunks off the road, and its a decent start, but, I do question how effective it really is. Clearly, getting a hammered driver off the road is awesome, but, ride checks in their very nature just aren’t doing enough. Our penalties for drunk driving are a joke, and the legal paperwork involved with impaired driving is a joke. A cop once told me, an impaired driver can take 4 plus hours of paperwork, screening tests, etc. WOW
If you have 10K to pay your lawyer, you can pretty much buy your way out of a conviction. Just do some good ole google checking. Its quiet shocking. My biggest beef is this damn warn suspension crap. I am either impaired or not. Either lower the limit, or get rid of the warn suspension. <— That I take issue with. MADD has too much power in politics in this regard.
Some will say, if you have nothing to hide, you need not worry. As long as the police are having a conversation with me, I agree 100%! This is where Ontario excels! I have been in other provinces, and instead of the typical "Have you had anything to drink, where are you coming from?" conversation, they ask to see your drivers licence, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration. That is their version of a conversation. For me, that crosses the line.
One cop said it best, he was having the conversation with me, and yelled to the cop behind him something along the lines of, tell the guy to get his headlight fixed. I said that was nice of you, rather than a ticket. Cop said, " I am not here to write tickets for a headlight, we are here to get drunks off the road" <—When ride checks keep with that mantra, they have my full support.

Yes, police do arrest blacks most of the time. our jails are 70% black. there are many poor whites in jail but not as many as blacks. today, there is shooting in the west toronto as im posting this. they didnt relase who is involed. but i bet its blacks and police is involved. Totally agree…My 1 year old(just)2012 mustang was written off last June while stopped, with other traffic…..at least a miles worth because of an accident further down the eastbound lanes, I was rear ended at damn near full speed(we were in the left lane) by a drunk, pushed me into the car in front of me….impact fired their vehicle a good 80 feet forward!! I, and My passenger should be dead, but the safety systems did their job flawlessly. $32K in damage later…….It was written off, all because somebody who is old enough to know better…..wouldn’t do the right thing.
We have the RIDE program, and other systems, simply because they are needed…humans need to be governed with stuff like this, because some, simply cannot be trusted to behave in a manner that is conducive to the health and well being of others.
But they found his CAR, didn’t they? The guy who ran was demonstrating that (1) he had something to hide and (2) just how stupid he was. He still will be getting in some sort of trouble (he probably was drunk.) The only thing he saved was the DUI charge. Think of the towing charge!
Nonetheless, as much as I hate drunk drivers (yes, I “hate” because they are a serious danger to me), I object to RIDE checkpoints. I like what they are trying to do, but they are invading my privacy and, in my opinion, subjecting me to unreasonable searches. No, I don’t have anything to hide but it still makes me think of the movies rendition of Gestapo. That, I don’t like.
The towing charge will be far less than the fine. Now he just denies he was ever in the car. Unless they have photo proof that he was driving.. he will get off.
Yes, the police have the car, but it is possible that the runaway won’t be caught. What if it was a stolen vehicle?

You’re kidding right? Ask the family of a person who was killed by a drunk that would have loved to have had a ride search catch that person. Statistics on the numbers of people caught under the influence by ride spot checks prove their worthiness. The average person is inconvenienced less than 5 minutes. A simple question of “have you been drinking today?” and the answer “no” usually sends the motorist on their way pretty quickly. Guns are not drawn, ID is not asked for and often times, a coupon for something free or discounted is usually handed out. There is a big difference between public safety and public intimidation. Ride checks are usually always done late at night and on weekends when the drinking and driving idiots are out. An inconvenience, hardly. Get over it Mr/Mrs Square Root
I agree 100%. 5 minutes of inconvenience means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Besides, if I had to be pulled over by the police, I would MUCH rather it be because of a ride spot check as opposed to ANY OTHER REASON!
