A rodent infestation has closed down a Kensington Market fish shop that’s been serving people for 50 years.
Photos of rats were posted online, drawing the attention of Toronto Public Health.
A number of area residents told CityNews they could see the rodents through the storefront window.
The New Seaway Fish Market was forced to close and workers have been cleaning for the last 24 hours.
“I just really worry about my business and I’m really sorry to my customers,” owner Kim Chou told CityNews.
Chou said he’s never seen rats in his establishment before but this incident has already cost him his biggest customer.
He said he is working closely with Toronto Public health and a notice posted on the door says the shop has passed its latest inspection.

You gotta be nuts to eat ANYWHERE in downtown Toronto, much less Chinatown, IMO.

No thanks.
Buildings and infrastructure in the Chinatown/Kensington market area is probably as old as everyone posting here combined, theres little businesses can do to quell and/or suppress pests even with the help of professional pest control systems. LIke knotme said, the buildup of garbage that isn’t being disposed of doesn’t help.
rats in a toronto eatery / market?!? what a shock. you are sorry you got caught! i would never at anywhere in kensington, chinatown etc. rat city. all that garbage up and down spadina. alleyways etc. its a feast for very rat/cat/pigeon. public health should be whipped for not cleaning up this mess and actively handing out violations. a stranger posting a pic on a public website gets their attention? pathetic.
Is there some connection between the increasing rat population and the City’s decision to save money by limiting garbage collection to once per week? In the bad old days, the City collected garbage twice per week (Less food left lying around for the rats). —– I think that the whole idea of having a government is that the government is supposed to provide beneficial services much more economically on a large, collective scale than individuals can provide on their own. That’s just a theory though.
Wow! who knew, rats eat fish?
