Public elementary school teachers in Toronto and across the province are wearing black arm bands in remembrance of the victims of Friday’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

The Toronto chapter of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) sent a memo to members on plans to commemorate the young children and school staff killed in the massacre.

Martin Long, president of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto, said members, including those on the picket line as part of rolling one-day walkouts across the province, held a moment of silence at 9 a.m. and will wear black armbands Monday.

Toronto public school teachers will hold a one-day strike on Tuesday, and Long encouraged them to wear the arm bands for that walkout.

Toronto District School Board chair Chris Spence sent two letters to teachers on Monday, advising schools and parents on how to respond to students’ questions about the shooting. They can be seen below.
