Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey set a December box office record, raking in US $84.8 million in its opening weekend.

The first film in the second Lord of the Rings trilogy beat out 2007′s I Am Legend, which made $77.2 million, according to film-tracking website boxofficemojo.com.

The Hobbit crushed the No. 2 and No. 3 movies, out-earning Rise of the Guardians and Lincoln by $80 million.

Rise of the Guardians, an animated fantasy movie, made $7.4 million. Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln made $7.2
million.
