Connecticut police have confirmed the identity of the young man who killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday.

An autopsy conduced on Sunday confirmed the shooter was Adam Lanza, 20. Police say he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His death has been ruled a suicide.

Police also confirmed that one of the victims was Nancy Lanza, the shooter’s mother.  She died of multiple gunshot wounds. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

State Police Lt. Paul Vance said they are making progress in their investigation however they won’t release any details until they’ve looked at every angle.

“We have recovered evidence. Contrary to some of the news reports that have been out there, we have recovered some evidence,” said Vance.

“It is being analyzed. It is being processed. The weaponry involved, we are tracing them historically all the way back to when they were on the workbench being assembled. And every, every bit of ancillary information regarding every weapon is also being examined and looked at with our federal partners.”

Vance said that multiple 30-round magazines and hundreds of bullets were found at the school. Police say they have identified the weapons used in the shooting.

“The weapon that was utilized most of the time during this horrific crime was identified as a Bushmaster AR-15 assault type weapon. It had high capacity magazines and in addition to that the suspect had in his possession a Glock 10 millimeter and a Sig Sauer 9 millimeter,” said Vance.

A shotgun was also found in Lanza’s vehicle, which was parked outside of the school.

Vance said they still have many witnesses to interview, including children, as part of the investigation.

President Barack Obama has travelled to Newtown, Conn., and will spend the day speaking to the families of the victims before giving a press conference Sunday evening.
