A British nurse who committed suicide after being taken in by a prank call to a hospital treating Prince William’s pregnant wife Kate hanged herself from a wardrobe in her apartment, police said on Thursday.

Jacintha Saldanha’s body was found last Friday, days after she put the call from an Australian radio station through to a colleague who disclosed details of the treatment of the Duchess of Cambridge, who was suffering from acute morning sickness.

Detective chief inspector James Harman told the coroner at an inquest that Saldanha was found hanging by a scarf.

“There were also some injuries to the wrist,” he said. Three notes were also discovered at the scene.

The prank made headlines around the world, as did news that Saldanha, who was married with two children, had then apparently committed suicide. The news led to widespread condemnation of the radio station involved, 2DayFM.

Presenters Mel Greig and Michael Christian had phoned the private King Edward VII’s Hospital at 5:30 a.m. British time, pretending to be William’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and his father, heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles.

Saldanha, who answered the phone, transferred the call through to a nurse on Kate’s ward who disclosed brief details of her condition.
Also on Thursday, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the country’s broadcast regulator, said it had opened a formal inquiry to see if 2DayFM had breached its license conditions and commercial radio codes of practice.

The codes state that a station must not broadcast words of an identifiable person unless that person has given permission. The station has said it tried to contact hospital staff several times about the recordings.

The authority can impose new license conditions if it finds a breach or, in extreme cases, can suspend or cancel a broadcasting license.

The hospital has said Saldanha had not been criticized or disciplined for taking the hoax call, although British lawmaker Keith Vaz, who represents Saldanha’s family, has said he wanted an inquiry to establish the facts.

Greig and Christian have been suspended and their radio show cancelled.
