A driver has been charged after a female pedestrian was struck and killed in Vaughan early Thursday morning, York Regional Police say.

A 52-year-old woman was killed on Dufferin Street, south of Rutherford Road, around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police said that the roads were dry and clear at the time of the crash but it was dark in the area. The woman was crossing Dufferin from east to west while the driver was travelling south. The driver failed to remain at the scene.

A man later surrendered at a Vaughan police station around 9:10 a.m., police say.

Gino De Luca, 47, of Vaughan, was charged with failing to stop, failing to stop causing bodily harm and failing to stop causing death.

His next court appearance will be Jan. 10, 2013.
