An alleged abduction on the York University campus on Wednesday didn’t happen and was a prank, Toronto police say.

“Police have investigated the incident and spoken with the people involved. It has been revealed it was a prank played between the people involved,” police said in a release.

A passerby called police just before 5 p.m. Wednesday and told them someone had been forced into an older-model brown GMC Safari van near the fine arts building on the Keele campus.

The person gave a description of the alleged suspects, but couldn’t say whether the victim was male or female.

University officials beefed up security and said they were “deeply troubled” by the allegations, but when police went over York’s security footage, they could find no evidence of the abduction.

Police didn’t say whether anyone would be charged.
