A 22-year-old has died in hospital after a single-vehicle crash in Oshawa early Saturday morning.

It happened on Colonel Sam Drive near Farewell Street just after 3:30 a.m.

Police say the vehicle was travelling eastbound on Colonel Sam Drive when the driver lost control just after the roadway curved to the south. The vehicle rotated out of control, striking a tree on the centre median of the roadway.

Members of the public assisted police in freeing two men from the vehicle as the engine caught fire.

The two men were airlifted to Sunnybrook hospital.

The victim, the only passenger in the car, has been identified as Robert Jones of Oshawa.

The 25-year-old driver remains in stable condition with serious injuries.

Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. Charges are pending.
