A 10-month-old baby boy remains in critical condition hours after being pulled from a backyard pond at his grandparent’s house in Mississauga, Peel police say.

The infant’s grandmother found him face down in the decorative fish pond around 5 p.m. She immediately called 911.

When paramedics arrived at the home on Glen Erin Drive, he was without vital signs. After performing CPR, he regained a weak pulse and was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to SickKids.

Police have ruled it an accident and have closed their investigation, but are warning citizens to remain vigilant now that warmer weather is here.

“These type of tragedies happen all summer long,” said P.C. Fiona Thivierge. “Let’s remember to get those safety nets out, or a little fence around those ponds and pools.

“The young lad has vital signs back, we are just hoping that he hangs on.”
