It was a dog day in Los Angeles on Wednesday as Uggie, the now superstar canine of silent film The Artist, hit Hollywood for the nominations for the first annual Dog News Daily Golden Collar Awards — which honour dogs in film.

Uggie was joined by his Artist colleague Penelope Ann Miller, who announced the nominees for best dog in a theatrical film. Uggie earned two nods — one for his role in The Artist, and another for his part in Water for Elephants.

Other dog nominees included Cosmo from Beginners, Denver from 50/50, and Hummer from Young Adult.

Miller said she was happy her four-legged colleague was getting some recognition.
“I think there is one scene where I throw a newspaper at the dog and I felt horrible because I do love dogs, but he was a good little actor that dog.  I think he deserves all the accolades that he’s getting.”
Uggie himself seemed to enjoy his newfound fame.

The Golden Collar Awards will be handed out on Feb. 13.
