Toronto police are investigating the alleged abduction of a one-month-old baby.

Officers say they were moments away from issuing an Amber Alert when the child was safely returned to 41 Division early Friday morning.

Around 10pm the night before, Viral Patel and his wife had brought their newborn to a building in Etobicoke for what they thought was a casting call for a movie.

He says after a couple of minutes in the building, a woman whisked their baby into another room and disappeared. The parents soon realized the casting call was a ruse.

“I just prayed to God that the people who stole my baby – at least give them wisdom or a conscience to give my baby back,” Patel said.

The unit where the alleged abduction happened was at 175 Birmingham St., near Lake Shore Blvd. W. and Islington Ave. Although it belongs to a company that produces commercials and had authorized use of its space, the owner had no prior knowledge of the incident.

Not long after the Patels reported their baby missing, a member of the public returned her to police in Scarborough, and the 24-year-old woman accused of taking her was arrested.

Michelle Marie Gopaul, a model and actor from New York City, has been charged with abduction and is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on Saturday morning.
